Saturday 20th December 2014 … Vanarama Conference South
Sutton United 0 – 2 Whitehawk FC
Always a difficult place to visit, it was felt that Sutton were probably sitting in a false position in the league.
The first half was full of fantastic football including one Whitehawk move that consisted of 17 passes culminating in a header only just past the post by Sam Deering from a Nick Arnold cross.
Whitehawk’s John-Paul Kissock’s volley came back off the crossbar and the following up pair of Jake Robinson and Danny Mills headed over the bar from 2 yards out.
Nick Arnold scored the first goal, the right full back thundering a shot home from about 30 yards out.
From one of Sergio Torres’ driving runs he put a great ball through to Danny Mills who went one-on-one with the Sutton keeper who make a great stop – that would have made a more reasonable scoreline than the 0 -1 that Whitehawk took into the dressing room.
Steve King: “I thought the football in the first half was fantastic, we controlled the game for the majority of the half. Sutton’s best chance came in the 45th minute, when a Sutton forward bent the ball just past the post.”
The second goal came on 50 minutes, when Sam Deering went through 3 or 4 players and was tripped in the box – he got up to convert the spot kick.
Whitehawk sat back just a little on the 2 goal lead and choose to attack on the counter. Sutton had a few good chances in the second half which Craig Ross dealt with, pushing two away for corners. But Whitehawk continued to defend magnificiently as a group and also continued to probe on the counter.
Nick Arnold made one of his surging runs into the penalty box and was taken out by the goalkeeper with a two footed challenge – this appeared to be a clearer penalty shout than the one given earlier.
Whitehawk gave a confident display today – in the middle of a good run of form.
