Vanarama Conference South …. Saturday 31st January 2015

Chelmsford City FC 2 – 1 Whitehawk FC

A few dozen Chelmsford supporters and officials cleared the pitch of snow in the morning allowing this game to go ahead.

It was still snowing heavily at kick off and the surface wasn’t easy.

After only 11 minutes Chelmsford had a free kick, near the byline and only about 5 yards into the Whitehawk half. Joe Ward sent the ball sailing straight into the back of the net! The sort of freak goal that comes arrowing in on the wind – the keeper, debutant loanee Seb Brown from Bromley, would only need to he half a yard off his line to be beaten.

Whitehawk replied on 19 minutes when Jake Robinson cleverly lifted the ball over the advancing Chelmsford stopper, Tom Lovelock also making his debut, with a mid air twist.

Whitehawk could have taken the lead after a quickly taken free kick, following a foul on Hawk’s other debutant – winger Christian Nanetti. The ball worked through to Nanetti he shot hard and low towards the corner of the goal, the home keeper getting down quickly to make a very good save.

Whitehawk win a number of corners with Nanetti and Deering being influential and creating a number of chances: Sam Deering’s shot is turner away and Tom Cadmore’s downward header is cleared too.

Moments before halftime a kick from the home keeper kick downfield and ball the runs straight through the pitch – the Hawks keeper comes out to clear – unfortunately to Michael Cheek of Chelmsford who scores another odd goal from 35 yards into an empty net.

Half Time 2 -1

The Second half saw Whitehawk push and push for at least an equaliser.

Manager Steve King: “I don’t know how we lost that game! Well I do … two mistakes at the back. We created double figures in good chances today – but we come away with nothing!

From another good cross by Christian Nanetti, Sam Gargan had a good firm header, unfortunately the keeper was right behind it. Jake Robinson got himself into a good position, one-on-one with the keeper, but slipped as he was about to shoot. David Ijaha had a bursting run but blasted a powerful shot well over. Jake Robinson had a terrific shot from 25 yards out that was just inches over. Sam Gargan had a very crisp strike that was just over too.

Two chances fell to Christian too, one brought out a good save from the keeper and the other went just past the post. Oh yes and Sam Deering only had to go either side of the keeper with a header …

Many chances … and at the other end Seb Brown made two very good saves too, one with his legs and the other at his near post.
